Weather you love or hate this hedgehog, we all know that he has at least some good games. He has even surpassed Mario in terms of sales in the early 90s. You might not like all games on this list, especially number 1, but remember this is an opinion. Anyways, here are my top 5 Sonic games! (I’m going to regret this). (Also, I have updated this from the original. My old top 5 were in the following order from least to greatest: Sonic Generations, Sonic 3 & Knuckles, Sonic Adventure, Sonic Mania, and the same number one as now. No, I am not going to tell number one that easily 🙂 )
Number 5: Sonic 3 & Knuckles
Sonic 3 & Knuckles is a amazing game with great story telling, gameplay, and music. I love the way the story is told/presented, with short, to the point, and easy to understand cut scenes. As for the gameplay, it must be pretty good in order to still hold up after 23 years. I never get bored of paying the game over and over! It was even the first game I’ve ever 100% completed. And finally, the music is great just like almost all Sonic music is. I really hope they re release this game on Switch. If you haven’t played it yet, go do it now! It’s pretty cheap on Steam.
Number 4: Sonic Generations
This was an amazing game to celebrate Sonic’s 20th anniversary. Generations had very good remixes of the old music, and it helped define the boost formula. The gameplay is very good, and it was awesome to see Classic Sonic return in such a good way. I only have a few issues with the game. First of all, I don’t like the story and humor of the game. It is very slow paced, and they could have made Classic Sonic’s appearance more important in the story. Second of all, I wish the game was longer because the gameplay is excellent. Even with it’s small flaws, I would still highly recommend Sonic Generations.
Number 3: Sonic Mania
Sonic Mania is an amazing game, especially for recent times. This game is Sonic 3 & Knuckles but even better. The music is the best in any Sonic game ever, with amazing remixes and great new tracks. The pixel art is some of the best in any game ever! The gameplay is even better than Sonic 3 because of the drop dash, which makes the game flow much better. The returning stages are back in ways I would have never imagined, with neat additions to every second act. The new stages are extremely unique and are as fun as the returning stages. The story is told in a similar way to Sonic 3, and it even has ties to Sonic Forces! Extras include time attack mode, a 2 player mode, a Dr. Robotnick’s Mean Bean Machine mode, a blue spheres mode, and a sound test. Even level select, Super Sonic, and debug mode return! Also can’t forget about the & Knuckles no save mode, where you can play as any character- even Knuckles- with knuckles (progress does not save in that mode). And the best part is; it’s only $20! The game is a steal, go buy it now!
Number 2: Sonic Adventure
I feel like Sonic Adventure was an excellent attempt to bring Sonic to 3D. The music is great (as always). The levels are really well designed and are very fun. I also love the ability to play as 6 characters (Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy, Gamma, and Big) who each have their own personality and gameplay gimmicks. The animation and story are not very great, but I still find it very charming. The only problem I have with the game is Big. Oh Big. His gameplay was slow, boring, and confusing with no redeeming aspects. At least his story is very short! Even with Big wasting 30 minutes of your time, I would still recommend you get Sonic Adventure on one of the many consoles it’s available on.
Sonic the Hedgehog
Sonic Triple Trouble
Number 1: Sonic Unleashed (Wii)
I know what your thinking: “What!? Sonic Unleashed for Wii!? That games horrible!” Well, I don’t think so. First of all the story and voice acting is spot on, being not to complicated and more serious. I don’t know about you, but I really enjoy the wherehog stages. They are a nice break from the action and I enjoy the challenges they bring. The boost stages are even better, being fast paced and very well designed. I especially love Eggman Land, because of the challenge, music, and design. This game also has one of the best music tracks in video game history (Endless Possibilities). It has a good amount of extra content for you to enjoy as well. The motion controls also add into the immersion. Even though nostalgia has a little bit to do with my decision, it barley effects it. Overall, I believe Sonic Unleashed for Wii is the best Sonic game of all time.
