It’s that time of the year again! A Nintendo Direct has officially been confirmed to be arriving tomorrow (September 6th) at 6 PM EST. It will be thirty five minutes of Nintendo Switch and Nintendo 3DS news. Unfortunately that is all the information we’ve been told. So of course with a Nintendo Direct coming so soon, I have a few predictions, some of which are safe and others of which are wild guesses. Here we go!
(EDIT: The Nintendo Direct has been pushed over to September 13th, 2018. However my opinions are still accurate to those before.)
-We will get one newcomer and one echo fighter revealed in a CGI trailer together. Newcomers I can see being announced include Incineroar (Pokémon Sun and Moon), Issac (Golden Sun), or Skull Kid (The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask). I think Nintendo would want to save characters like Banjo, Geno and Rayman for another Smash focused Direct. As for echo fighters, I could see Isabelle (Animal Crossing) or Shadow the Hedgehog (Sonic the Hedgehog) being announced. If you follow me on Twitter or Instagram, you probably know I’m rooting hard for Shadow.
-Also related to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, I believe Nintendo will have an online demo for purchasers of the Online Service which would release along side the service. It would explain why Best Buy preorders for Smash Pro Controllers where moved up to September 28th suddenly earlier tonight. Not to mention there isn’t a big enough game to launch beside the service yet, but a Smash demo would be a huge deal. It would certainly sell me on the service if I was on the fence about it.
-This is more of a safe prediction, I believe a title or two for the series of games under the SEGA AGES brand will release shortly after the Direct. I say this is safe as SEGA promised us that Sonic the Hedgehog and a few other classic titles would be available under the SEGA AGES brand for $10 each in August. Since that statement it was suddenly announced to be delayed on August 28th to be moved to September. Seems a bit suspicious if you ask me. SEGA probably saw the Direct as a perfect time to give attention and gain interest in the games, especially if they release immediately following the Direct. Maybe SEGA Saturn and Dreamcast support will be announced, but that’s just wishful thinking.
-I expect new trailers for both the Pokémon Let’s Go! games and Super Mario Party. Other than Smash, they are Nintendo’s biggest titles they have going for them this Christmas season. There are many things we could still learn about like that secret Pokémon or a new mode for Mario Party. These are rather obvious predictions, so let’s move on.
-I fully expect to see Yoshi and one other 2019 game be shown here. Yoshi was an obvious choice as Nintendo promised us more info for this year. As for the other game, it could be a previously announced title such as Daemon X Machina, Fire Emblem Three Houses or even Bayonetta 3. However, I highly doubt we will hear one thing on the developments of the Pokémon Core RPG for 2019 or Metroid Prime 4. Maybe Nintendo will surprise us with an IP revival, new IP, the rumored Star Fox racing game or Pikmin 4 but again that is highly unlikely.
-I think we will see port of New Super Mario Bros. U or Super Mario Maker for this holiday with brand new content. These two ports have been rumored since the Switch’s reveal and it would be a nice way to fill any gaps. Maybe added online modes for the online service would be cool.
-I think we will be only seeing four (max five) 3DS games. Games they may go over include Luigi’s Mansion and the Mario & Luigi: Bowsers Inside Story remake. They also may show games that they are bringing from Japan to the west. However, I’m predicting there will be one new game that we haven’t seen before from Nintendo or a major 3rd party. They will probably spend roughly 5 to 7 minutes on the 3DS.
-We will learn one new detail we haven’t previously known regarding the online service and an exact release date. I’m not expecting something as big as Super Nintendo games coming in Online or local voice chat. Maybe we will get native messaging. Also we may finally see the second half of the NES games coming and more details on how cloud saving will work.
-We will get a tease of a big game many people have been asking for like Animal Crossing or Mother 3. It would just be a fifteen to thirty second clip which includes no gameplay ending with a “2019.” This is a more out there prediction, but Nintendo Directs are always full of surprises so who knows at this point.
-We will receive news on upcoming 3rd party releases such as Dark Souls: Remastered, Mega Man 11, Team Sonic Racing, Diablo III, Warframe, etc. These will just be shown in a quick fashion with small news updates. Updates can include Amiibo support, new modes or maybe even release dates. These are all big titles so I can easily see Nintendo wanting to give them as much attention as possible.
-We will get news of one new 3rd party port such as Fallout 4 or Grant Theft Auto V. They will be given a release date for this Winter or first half next year. I also fully expect Nintendo Switch Online support if the game has online capabilities. Please SEGA give us Sonic Generations or Unleashed for Switch!
-We may see a few indie games or a compilation of classic games like Castlevania. However, I think we will barely see any of this as we just received two Nindies Presentations in the last month with a few other indie announcements separately like A Hat in Time. As for collections, I could see as I said a Castlevania collection or maybe a localization of the Secret of Mana collection.
Anyways that is all for my Nintendo Direct predictions! Are you ready for tomorrow? Because I don’t think I am. I would also have to advise not giving this Direct too much hype so you wont be disappointed. Expect a round up of the news tomorrow for it, and see you then! 🙂
