It’s our favorite time of the year again; other than Christmas and summer. Earlier today a Nintendo Direct was officially announced to be airing tommorrow at 6 P.M. EST, and with that comes my annual predictions. Before I begin, I have a warning- if you do not want to know anything about the leaked fourth Super Smash Bros. Ultimate DLC fighter or of another leaked huge 3rd party title then click off. I doubt this will be too much of an issue considering how widespread the information for both leaks have gotten on Twitter and articles, however. Enough time has been wasted, so let’s start with what we do know and build from there!
Despite what some others believe, I actually think we are getting major Pokémon news. A Nintendo Direct has never outlined Pokémon as one of the games that will have a major section until now (if I’m not mistaken) and the Pokémon Company shared the Direct tweet. Although, don’t go in expecting Kalos or final starter evolutions. I would say starter mid-evolutions with a few new Pokémon and a new mode is a safe bet. As for what this mode could be, perhaps activities in the wild area or a completely seperate more city like wild area.
Next up for what we know will be in the Direct is Luigi’s Mansion 3. I expect roughly five minutes of dedicated time which will have a few announcements. One of which will be the last huge new mode which has yet to be revealed, perhaps something relating to the other Mario characters who will be in the game. We will probably also get some character introductions, ghosts, mechanic details, and the basic overall plot of the game. I do not see too much they can show of the game other than what I have said.
Now, to get the leaks out of the way before I get into the juicy unique stuff. Terry (as the leaked SNK rep) will be announced for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate at the beginning of the Direct. We will also likely get a Banjo month if not an exact date, and that will be all for Smash Bros. Also, yes; Overwatch will be announced to come to Switch in October as leaked. I am betting on a Switch bundle featuring Overwatch simalar to what we got with Blizzard’s last game on the Switch, Diablo III. The bundle might be shown separately from the Direct though.
Now that we’re out of leaks and confirmed topics, let’s start the unique predictions simple. I am betting on SNES games joining the Nintendo Online service with them dropping maximum a week after the Direct. It will launch with ten games, including; Super Mario World, The Legend of Zelda: a Link to the Past, Super Metroid, Super Mario Kart, F-Zero and one third party game. Also, I pedict Nintendo will not comment on future systems joining the service nor create a raise in price of the service for those who want SNES games.
I am predicting two Metroid announcements. Firstly, an HD version of the Metroid Prime Trilogy will launch in Spring of 2020. It will include a hint towards Metroid Prime 4 once completing every game, perhaps a small development update/tease. Secondly, a 2.5D Metroid (being Metroid 5 for the 2D titles) will get a very quick teaser trailer and a vague date of “2020”. Unfortunately, I doubt we will hear of Metroid Prime 4 in a Direct until 2021 at the earliest. Anyhow, the 2.5D Metroid teaser may be saved until the end of the Direct- it all depends on how much emphasis Nintendo wants to put on the franchise.
Nintendo will show up with two updates regarding Super Mario Maker 2. Firstly, they will announce that online play with friends is available immediately following the Direct. Then, Nintendo will announce a new game style as DLC (could be paid or included as a free update). I am not sure on what this style will be for certain, but if I had to guess probably Super Mario Bros. 2 or Super Mario Land 2. The DLC style will release sometime randomly this Fall.
Next up, SEGA will have a decent presence during the Direct. Considering this Direct is only five days before the 20th anniversary of the SEGA Dreamcast and how SEGA commented on getting Dreamcast games to run on Switch last year, I think Sonic Adventure and Crazy Taxi will be announced as the first Dreamcast games under the SEGA AGES brand. Secondly, Alien Isolation will have a small presence alongside a specific release date. Last but not last, I predict the final playable characters for Mario & Sonic at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games will be revealed. It is also possible we get Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz HD and Panzer Dragoon Remake news.
Here’s a big one for you. If Metroid and Smash aren’t used for the end of the Direct, that’s because this title is taking the spot being a bigger announcement than both. The next mainline 3D Mario title will be teased to release early Fall of 2020. It may be Odyssey 2, Galaxy 3, Sunshine 2 or even something completely original. No matter what the case is, I am positive this game will feature Isle Delphino in some way, shape or form. It will also feature Luigi as a playable character teasing a brand new co-op mode.
This is the last I have to say on Nintendo first party titles, there will be two of the three games listed here in the Direct, one for December of this year and the other for 2020. We will get the announcement of a new Paper Mario, a new Mario & Luigi game and/or a new Wario game. These will all be completely seperate from the announcement of a Pikmin 3 port releasing very early next year. Alright, although Nintendo is done, there are still other third parties to address.
I believe Capcom, Konami and Square Enix will have some sort of presence in the Direct. Perhaps Konami could announce a new Bomberman considering how successful Super Bomberman R was, but I am more so betting on yet another collection of games from them. Square Enix will likely have one semi major port, either something Kingdom Hearts related or Final Fantasy VI. Last but not least, Capcom will show up with information on the upcoming Zero collection or with another port simalar to the Resident Evil 4 though 6 ones.
Finally, as my last major prediction, there will be that one game which nobody was expecting seperate from Overwatch. It could be that crazy idea for a free online Kirby game GameXplain discussed, it could be a new Punch Out, maybe even the next major Star Fox. This game will make the Direct something to remember, for better or for worse. And no; it will not be Mother 3 or anything of the sort.
Thank you for reading, and do not forget; the Nintendo Direct will air at 3:00 PM PT/6:00 PM EST on September 4th and will last for fourty minutes.
